we are following tragic developments from brazil this

morning. almost 250 people are dead following a fire at a nightclub. what likely contributed to the mass casualties. a large fire burning this morning at a cement plant here in cupertino. we'll tell you what we know about what has caught fire here. getting ready to two. in just hours the niners will lee the bay area for new orleans. details on their departure. good morning, and welcome to mornings on 2 it is sunday, january 27th i'm claudine wong. >> and i'm mike mibach. walked out of the house to grab the paper today, felt the wind and cold. let's check if with rosemary. >> good morning, to you. pretty start to the day. 15 minutes until the official sunrise. mike mentioned, it is cold and brisk. for the afternoon mostly sunny skies. temperatures will be cooler than what we felt on saturday. i will line up your numbers and show you what i see coming up.

we begin with a developing story of a tragedy in south america. at least 245 people are now dead in a nightclub fire in southern brazil. we want to show you the first pictures of the aftermath that are coming into our newsroom. the fire broke out at the kiss nightclub during a concert. that club reached maximum capacity with up to 2,000 party goers inside. the casualty toll is expected to climb. at least 200 pay tree quantities were hurt. a nearby gym has been turned into a makeshift morgue. investigators say it's too early still to figure out the cause of the fire. stay tuned throughout county -- stay tuned to ktvu throughout the morning for more updates. ktvu alex savidge just arrived on scene. what can you show us? what can you tell us? >> reporter: i can tell you

this is a pretty good sized fire that is burning here at the lee high hanson cement plant. you can see a pretty good plume of black smoke that is coming up from this hillside here. there is workers driving by leaving the plant at this point. but you can see a lot of smoke there. what we understand is on fire is trucks of some kind. heavy equipment that is up in that area. it's unclear how the equipment caught fire. we understand there is power lines involved here because pg&e has called in. also have calls into the fire department. the plant as well. working to get more information on exactly what has caught fire here. but we are being kept a good distance away from it. we will try to gather more information and be back later on in the show. alex savidge ktvu channel 2 news. two-year-old boy and his mother are listed in stable condition after getting shot last night in menlo park. the drive by shooting happened

around 7:45 at the intersection of willow road and bay front expressway. they were in a car with four other people when they were hit. the driver then drove to a mcdonalds parking lot before stopping. the car was riddled with close to a dozen bullet holes. they are investigating to whether the shooting was gun related. >> toddler was sitting on the mother's lap. they were both hit. the child sustained a grazing wound to his head. >> the child and 24-year-old mother were taken to the hospital but their injuries are not life threatening. the gunman was in a green honda with another person. they were heading toward the dumbarton bridge. less than 90 minutes after that shooting a man was gunned down on capitol avenue in east palo alto. 21-year-old lamont coleman was pronounced dead at the scene.

the two shootings are unrelated. no arrests have been made in either case. hundreds of guns are now in the hands of law enforcement after being turned in by their owners. 680 firearms were turned in at a gun buyback. congresswoman jackie spears says every gun turned one less life lost. >> there will be a debate this year on whether or not every person or any person should be allowed to have an assault weapon. >> some of the audience says gun control is not the answer. a new magazine interview with president obama might surprise gun control advocates. coming up in ten minutes why those advocates need to listen

more. president answers the question about whether or not he has ever fired a gun. in over night news a car speeding from police went the wrong way on interstate 880 in hayward. they spotted the vehicle driving sporadically. they tried to flag him down but he took off. the driver crashed head on into another vehicle. >> the sheriffs department did continue their pursuit of the vehicle. a few minutes later the vehicle was involved in a collision as it tried to exit here. slided head on with a vehicle. >> two women in the other were taken to the hospital but their injuries are not considered life threatening. the man ran from the car and has not been caught. the driver of the stolen suv that crashed into a tree is still on the loose. there were a total of eight

people in the gmc yukon. it reached speeds topping 90 miles an hour. the crash killed a 19-year-old passenger while five others were injured. police say they caught one person running from the scene. this morning the coast guard is trying to figure out what caused a sailboat to collide with a tug boat near the golden gate bridge. >> they were rescued by fish and golden gate. >> it happened around 3:00 yesterday afternoon. a tug boat was towing a barge when the collision happened. both people were rescued and weren't hurt. the coast guard is interruing crew members to try to determine what led up to the crash. the coast guard was also called out to rescue a fisherman in sonoma county. the man's boat got stuck in a marsh yesterday afternoon and he got stranded after he tried to walk to shore. the coast guard used the helicopter to reach him and he

was not hurt. if you park in san francisco you need to feed the meter to avoid a ticket. it's the first sunday that the city's new parking fees will be enforced between noon and 6:00 p.m.. until now drivers got warners but that grace period ends today. san francisco 49ers will have one last chance to wish the team good luck. before the players lead for the super bowl they are departing from their practice facility until noon today. and then they will head out on a delta charter night for new orleans. the baltimore ravens fly to new orleans tomorrow. we are also sending a team of anchors to new orleans. they will have live reports and every newscast leading up to super bowl sunday. those will start tonight. immediately following the super bowl you will see a live local

on what those measures are. he is protesting u.n. sanctions after a rocket test last month. upcoming magazine article about president obama surprise some gun control advocates. he has a profound respect for the traditions of hunting. in fact he says he and friends go skeet shooting at camp david all the time. gun control advocates need to listen more and understand why many americans are weary of government limits on firearms. as many as 25,000 people are expected to pack a gun show in southern california this weekend amid debate over gun control. attendees at the cross roads of the west gun show say they are concerned that guns may soon be harder to obtain. they say los angeles gun stores are having a hard time keeping ammunition in stock. >> if you look at these lines, today. this is a prime example of people who are angry and worried. >> record crowds also turned

out for gun show in daly city earlier this month. hundreds of people in san francisco joined a nation-wide protest against gun violence. people marched through christie field holding antigun signs. organizers hope that tapping into the power of family. >> i just want to get some common sense gun safety solutions out there so we don't have to go through this again and again. >> one million moms for gun control is a grass roots organization that was found after the newtown shooting. they have 72 chapters across the nation. the group's largest gun control march took place yesterday in washington, d.c.. supporters say despite a lower than expected turnout they felt energize. police estimate about 1,000 people marched to the capitol. >> look at all the changes people said couldn't happen. civil rights, womens rights,

don't ask don't tell, sometimes quickly, sometimes slowly. change will happen when we work for it as a country. >> this will not work or make a difference. >> what will make a difference? >> prosecute guys that commit crimes. >> a minister asked the crowd to pray in the direction of the white house to wish the obama administration success in passing tighter gun control laws. >> tens of thousands of protestors took to the streets of san francisco for the anniversary of legalizing abortion. pro-life protestors marched down market street from the civic center to justin herman plaza demanding roe v wade be turned over. a law student who testified before congress about contraception was a guest speaker. >> there is a more profound sight about access.

about affordability and insurance coverage and making sure people especially in rural areas have access. >> i would like to see everyone question abortion more. they say it should be legal and safe they don't talk about rare. >> as many as 40,000 people attended the pro-life rally. it's the biggest antiabortion event on the west coast. supreme court could weigh in on the health care law requiring employee insurance plans to cover the cost of contraceptions. dozens of lawsuits have been filed by charities saying the mandate violates their religious beliefs. antists say appeals courts have made conflicting rulings and seems likely the supreme court may take up the issue. advisory panel is calling for tighter restrictions on an -- the panel wants hydro codone to be classified as a scheduled 2 drug because of its potential

to cause addiction. the classification would limit the number of refills a patient could get. the fda has not said if it will act on the recommendation. hydrocodone is the post prescribed painkiller in the u.s.. casey anthony filed for bankruptcy. she claimed about $1100 in assets and $792 in liabilities. one claim covers a debt for scuba diving. she is unemployed with no recent income. a movie about oscar grant won a top prize at the sun dance festival. >> why don't you take the train out there. that way you can drink and hang out. >> fruitvale follows grant's last 24 hours before he was shot and killed by a bart police officer four years ago. the film won the best dramatic

film 5:ward as well as audience a-- film awards as well as audience awards. benefit concerts continue to be sold this weekend to help bryan stow as he suffers a set back in his recovery. stow's mother is expected to attend tonight's concert in his hometown of santa cruz. it is one of four concerts organized by giants third base coach tim flanker reand his band. giants fan suffered brain damage after being severely beaten outside of dodgers stadium back in 2011. a public hearing scheduled for tomorrow in the future of pete's harbor has been postponed. the city canceled it after both the developer and save pete's harbor group asked for a delay. the california state commission is expected to clarify at its

meeting in april whether the lease on the outer harbor can be transferred to the developer. without the lease, the development deal could fall through. we should learn this week how many people are living on the streets in santa clara county. the county's annual count of the homeless is scheduled to take place tuesday and wednesday. a 2011 survey found more than 7,000 people were homeless on any given night in that county and that number is expected to rise this year. volunteers are still needed for that county. president obama decides to talk a little football. if he had sons he may not let them play. the unusual interruption that sent players and coaches scrambling during a college basketball game. while we slept chilly temperatures slipped into the bay area. just how much cooler we are this morning and what you can expect for the afternoon coming up.

president obama says if he had a son, it's possible he would not let him play football. the president is a big sports fan and loves his hometown chicago bears but he's saying he's deeply concerned about the severe head injuries associated with football. president obama adds that new safety rules might make football rules less safely. he is not worried about college players because they have a union and well paid. steph curry had 26 points against the milwaukee bucks last night but it wasn't enough to beat former warrior monta ellis. warriors still lose 109-102. now before they played the bucks, marquette university was playing providence in the same building and the game was interrupted by a bat. the bat first appeared with about 11 minutes left in the game. it sent players and referees

at a cement plant in cupertino. alex savidge is live on the scene with the latest details of the fire. alex. >> reporter: roughly an hour and a half after the fire first broke out here, you can see as you look over there you can see a plume of smoke up on this hillside. firefighters still trying to get a handle on it. we did within the last half hour get an update from the santa clara fire department. dispatcher said it's confirmed that trucks and tires are what is burning here up on this hillside. again this is on the property of the lee high hanson cement company. one more complication there were power lines involved with this fire. pg&e has been called in to come and assist firefighters here.

we put in a call to pg&e this morning trying to get more information on exactly their involvement in this. we have not heard back from them. i also did put in a call to the lee high hanson plant as well. was not able to get any information there. we as you can tell are being kept a pretty good distance away from where this fire is burning. we are being kept outside the front gates. we tried to get on to the property to get closer to the the fire we were not allowed to do so. the person at the gate would not give us any information on the fire itself. we are working to get more information. we hope to bring that to you late on mornings on 2. alex savidge ktvu channel 2 news. >> that is the same spot where three people died and seven others were injured in a mass shooting. a disgruntled employee opened fire at the plant there. a report by the district attorney just late last year said the gunman eventually killed himself. we have just received new video of that devastating nightclub fire in southern

brazil. this footage was taken inside the kiss nightclub as rescuers rushed in looking for survivors. it appears this is the outside right outside that club. 245 bodies have been pulled from that nightclub. a couple other hundred people were hurt. between 1,000 and 2,000 party goers were pushing and involving each other to escape. investigators are estimating there were 900 people in the builds at the -- building at the time. they called this a national tragedy. crime until california rose sharply last year. according to fbi statistics violent crime and property crime rose in 40 of california's largest cities. it's the largest crime instate they have seen in 20 years. crime rates vary grately. analysts say crime will likely increase again as prisons begin releasing inmates early. construction on high speed

rail is scheduled to begin in july but the state has not bought the land needed. the l.a. times reports officials have not acquired a single acre along the valley route. officials say they hope to begin making offers on land in the next several weeks. the cost of acquiring land could delay the project even further. prices have been rising that could raise property owners expectations far above what the state expects to pay. a banner is being blamed for cutting power to thousands of people in downtown san francisco. the banner promoting hair cuts fell from a small plane around noon yesterday near fifth and brandon streets. it landed on power lines forcing crews to shut down the busy intersection. and it also knocked out power to about 2,000 people in sow ma and the china basin neighborhoods. >> i saw the plane carrying a banner.

the banner frailing and drifting. >> power has been restored. the faa is look into what caused the banner to come off that plane. suspicious package shut down san francisco stockton tunnel for several hours. the bomb squad responded yesterday afternoon after someone spotted a metal suitcase on the sidewalk. people in nearby businesses were told to shelter in place and the tunnel and nearby streets were closed to all traffic. >> it was a metal case and we had no other way to determine what it was other than -- just because there is so much pedestrian, vehicle traffic. tons of people out here. so we had to air on safety. >> the tunnel was closed for at least two hours pap robot removed the suitcase which did not contain anything hazardous. the investigation into the cause of a huge fire will continue tomorrow. friday night fire destroyed the original pepper belly comedy and variety theater.

it took firefighters about three hours to control that blaze. yesterday firefighters spent the blaze making sure no debris could fall into the street. the area has been rendered safe and the street is back open to the public. firefighters in napa say an electric blanket may be to blame for what destroyed a mobile home. a neighbor woke up to the names and tried to put it out with a bucket of water but it was too late. that mobile home is a total loss but fortunately no one was hurt. an investigation found the california department forest and fire protection hid $3.6 million from the state. the l.a. times reports cal fire used funds collected from legal settlements for new equipment and training rather than depositing it in the state's general fund as required. these aren't just the latest allegations about a state department hiding funds. the states park department has come under fire for con seeming $20 million even as parks were in danger of being closed.

the state department of finances is planning to investigate the allegations. a staff infection outbreak at a high school in lafayette forced the cancellation of the congressional town hall meeting. that meeting was supposed to take place yesterday morning. and hundreds showed up to attend congressman george millers first session. but there was a sign on the door saying canceled due to staph. football fans are asking the obama administration for their very own national holiday. they created an online petition on the white house website. they want the monday after the super bowl declared a federal holiday. 111million americans lost last years big game. organizers hope to reach 100,000 by the end of next month. you can see the petition and some of the reasons for the

somalia. kidnapping for political and financial gain is a serious problem. the new warning comes days after several european countries advised their companies to leave libya because of the terrors threats. the death toll continues to climb from rioting in egypt. 37 people are now confirmed dead and at least 300 others injured. the violence began when protestors clashed with security personnel. demonstrators were angry at the death sentences handed out in connection to a soccer riot last year. some streets in egypt are desserted. and hotels asked guest to leave in fear or more violence. the usa is hoping to defrays the crisis in mali. they are waging war against al qaeda linked militants. panetta promised they would help refuel french jets. and they plan to transport

fighters to other african nations. new questions are being raised at the safety of bangladesh clothing factory after a second deadly fire there in two months. a fire broke out yesterday killing two people. there are reports people couldn't get out because the only emergency exit was locked. investigators are investigating those claims. a dallas man is thanking good samaritans for saving his life. jason doesn't remember running off the road and into a lake friday morning. his suv sank to the bottom and left him trapped inside. two joggers saw the crash and tried to pull him out. he was quite frantic when he saw his car sinking. two police officers came to help. >> on my way to work next thing

i know i'm in the ambulance. no clue what happened. >> doctors say he suffered a mild seizure causing the accident. they told him to avoid driving for the next six months. philadelphia police arrested a man who they say threatened to blow up the liberty bell. yesterday the man claimed he had put two black backpacks containing explosives in front of a store about a half block where that bell is displayed. police called in the bomb squad and found the backpack. they did not have explosives in them. the man has no criminal record and it's not clear right now what led him to make those claims. police in southern louisiana are questioning a man suspected of killing a triable officer. critically injuring two deputies and setting a fatal fire. it all began when officers responded to a report of a man walking down a road near a casino. the man opened fire on the triable officer killing him. two sheriffs deputies that also

campuses starting on march 1st. the aids will not be armed but they will be equipped with two way radios and vests. the plan is expected to cost $4.2 million. residents of san rafael could soon be paying less in taxes if they so choose. the school board will consider asking voters to remove the parcel tax in a special mail in election this week. last year the fund generated $4.8 million. the district says in a recent poll 70% of eligible voters said they would vote to extend that tax. national program to reduce childhood obesity is expanded to two bay area cities. members will be working in the oakland school district and in santa cruz. food core is a decision of aimer corp.

its goal is to educate chirp about nutrition. michael bloomberg has donated about $1 billion to his alma mater. $100million of that donation is earmarked for financial aid for students in need. according to the university, bloomberg is believed to be the first person to ever reach the $1 billion level of giving to a single u.s. institution of higher education. former republican vice presidential candidate paul ryan is urging his party to stay unitied. he spoke to a group of conservatives yesterday in washington. he told the crowd they must stick agent together and pick their fights against president obama during his second term. he is calling obama care 13,000 pages of regulations. >> sometimes we will have to reject the president's proposals. that time might come more than once. and sometimes we'll have to make them better. the president will bait us.

he will portray us as cruel and unruling. >> the wisconsin congressman is positioning himself for a possible run for the white house in 2016. the party must briden its appeal to include more minorities and women. chuck hagels nomination to replies leon panetta. the former nebraska senator is expected to appear before the armed services committee on thursday. hagel is a republican but his nomination is opposed by interest groups from both parties. the conservative organization for americans for strong defense is running tv ads saying hagel would weaken national security. the gay rights group has used hagel as being antigay, antiwoman, and antiisrael. he she is the first latino appointed to the high court. it recounts her life from bronx housing project to the federal bench.

the price of postage is going up again. it is now going to cost you 46 cents for a first class stamp and 33 cents for a postcard stamp. the latest increase was announced back in act. it comes as the postal service continues to struggle with money and is desperate for help from congress. the number of teenagers in marin county being arrested for dui's has doubled. the chp says they arrested twice as many teenagers 18 and younger for driving under the influence in 2012 compared to the year before. it says it is at a loss to explain why. the department also says the dui arrests of teenagers almost always involves multiple passengers. there is a new push to get a bike sharing program in marin. right new a public bike sharing system is being looked at by the transportation authority. bike would be made available at transit centers and town centers where people would pay to unlock a bike and take it to their destination. the bike would later be collected by a company and brought back to the original

that fire broke out around 2:00 this morning, local time. at least 245 people are dead. this is video taken from inside the club. video just arrived into our newsroom. rescuers searching for survivors. police believe the pyrotechnics for a music band set the building on fire. investigators say 500 to 1,000 people were inside at the time. many victims died from getting trampled or affixuation. back here in the bay area fire is burning at a cupertino cement plant. earlier we could see a plume of black smoke coming from the lee high plant. tires as well as large equipment are on fire. pg&e has also been called to the scene. right now there are no reports of injuries. a two-year-old boy and his mother are listed in stable condition after getting shot last night in menlo park. that happened around 7:45 at

the intersection of willow road and bay front expressway. that is across from the offices of facebook. now they were in a car with four other people when they were hit. the driver then drove to a mcdonalds parking lot in east palo alto before stopping. the car was riddled with close to a dozen bullet holes. >> the child was sitting on top of the female which was his mother's lap and they were both hit by bullets. they both sustained injuries to their legs. >> the child and 24-year-old mother were taken to stanford medical center. the other people in the car including the boy's father was not hurt. the gunman was in a green honda with another person. they were last seen headed toward the dumbarton bridge. less than 90 minutes after that a man was gunned down in east palo alto. he was pronounced dead at the scene. half a dozen bullet cases

surrounded the body. no arrests have been made in either case. one person is in critical condition after being thrown from a car. it happened around coolidge avenue. police are looking into what caused the crash. they say both drivers were going the speed limit and drugs and alcohol did not appear to be factors. no one else was hurt. car speeding from police went the wrong way on interstate 880. deputies spotted the vehicle driving rapidly around 11:00 p.m.. they tried to flag him down but the driver took off. deputies pulled back for safety but the driver still crashed head on right into another another car. the sheriffs department continued their pursuit of the vehicle. a few minutes later a vehicle was involved in a collation. they tried to exit. slided head on with a vehicle entering. >> two women in the other car were taken to the hospital but their injuries are not life

threatening. the man driving the wrong way ran from the scene and has not been caught. we want to update you on the story we first reported yesterday right here on mornings on 2. the driver of the stolen suv that crashed into a tree in oakland is still on the loose. a total of eight people were in the gmc yukon. the suv reached speeds topping 90 miles an hour during a police chase. the crash killed a 19-year-old passenger while five others were injured. police say they caught one person running from the scene. -ups of guns are -- hundreds of guns are in the hands of law enforcement after being turned in by their owners. 680 firearms were turned in in san mateo yesterday. gun owners received $100 for a handgun. shotgun or rifle. and $200 for assault weapons. congresswoman jackie spears survivor of the jones town massacre says every gun turned in is one less life lost. >> there will be a debate later this year on whether or not any

person should be allowed to have an assault weapon. >> spear held a town hall meeting in san francisco about gun violence. some in that audience said they do not believe gun control is the the answer. instead they say the justice system needs to do a better job blocking out felons. a gun buy back was also held in seattle. someone turned in a surface to air missile tube. the russian made weapon is fairly old and not operatable. it was among hundreds of weapons turned in yesterday. so many people showed up police had to end it early when their supply of gift cards ran out. as many as 25,000 people are expected to pack a gun show this weekend. attendees at the cross road say they are concerned that guns may be harder to obtain. >> if you look at the lines, today. this is a prime example of people who are angry and

enforced between noon and 6:00 p.m.. up until now drivers only got warnings but that grace period ends today. violators could find themselves with parking tickets starting at $62. public hearing is scheduled tomorrow in the future of pete's harbor in redwood city but it has now been postponed. the city canceled it after they asked for that delay. the california state lands commission is expected to clarify at its meeting in april if the lease can actually be transferred to the developer without that lease the development deal could fall through. water agency and environmental groups are asking the state to consider a smaller alternative to a planned tunnel for the sacramento, san joaquin river delta. . a smaller tunnel would actually result in more water for cities and farms. they also say it would with better for the environment and it would cost the state less.

lafayette. new questions are being raised about clothing factories in bangladesh after a second deadly fire there in just two months. that fire broke out yesterday killing seven people. there are reports people couldn't get out of the building because the only emergency exit was locked. the government is investigating the claims. but back in november when 112 people died in another clothing factory fire in bangladesh the gates of that building it was determined those were locked. u.s. military says it has successfully launched a missile interceptor rocket on the california's coast. they did not have a target. it was intended to be a warning to north korea that the u.s. has the technology to destroy long range byless tick missiles. north korea is threatening more nuclear tests this

morning. state run media reports that leader kim junk june held a high profile meeting. hundreds of people joined a nation-wide test in -- the so- called million mom stroll included several men. they hope tapping into the power of families will encourage change. >> i just want to get some common sense gun safety solutions out there so that we don't have to go through this again and again and again. >> one million moms for gun control is a grass roots organization that was formed after the newtown elementary school shooting. the group has 72 chapters across the nation including ones in san francisco and marin county. the groups largest gun

it's the biggest antiabortion event on the west coast. supreme court could weigh in on the provision of the health care law a-- dozens of lawsuits have been filed by charities, hospitals, and schools who say the mandate violates their religious beliefs. analysts say appeals courts have made conflicting rulings on the lawsuits and it seems likely the supreme court may eventually take up the issue. advisory panel to the fda is calling for tighter restrictions on an ingredient found in many prescription painkillers. they want hydrocodone to be classified as a schedule 2 drug. the classification would limit the number of refills to patient could actually get. the fda has not said if it will act on the recommendation. hydrocodone is the most prescribed painkiller in the u.s.. kasey anthony has filed for bankruptcy. anthony filed for chapter 7 bankruptcy in florida on

stow's mother is scheduled to attend tonight's concert in his hometown of santa cruz. it's one of four concerts organized by giants third base coach. stow was readmitted to the hospital on wednesday after suffering a blood clot that doctors say could have been fatal. man's best friend has a friend in the mayor of newark, new jersey. on thursday a news reporter tweeted to mayor corey booker there was a dog cold and alone in someone's front yard. so booker went to the house and got that dog. he put it into a police car to help it stay warm. the mayor found the owners cell phone number and gave him a call. that man said he was visiting friends in new york city and didn't know his dog had gotten out. >> this is brutal weather. this dog is shaking really bad. and you just can't leave your dogs out on a day like this. >> mayor booker has a habit of helping animals or people in need. in 2010 he shoveled the snow

this time of sadness we are all together and we are going to overcome this sadness while still in mourning. >> santa maria is located in southern brazil. many of the victims were college students. this morning the coast guard is trying to figure out what caused a sailboat to collide with a tug boat near the golden gate bridge. >> they were rescued by -- >> it happened around 3:00 yesterday afternoon. the tug boat was towing a barge when the accident happened. the force of the collision threw two people from the sailboat right into the water and caused that sailboat to sink. both people were rescued and no one was hurt. the coast guard was also called out to rescue a fisherman near the petaluma river in sonoma county. authorities say the man's boat got stuck in a marsh yesterday

afternoon. he got stranded after he tried to walk to shore. they used a helicopter to reach him. he was also not hurt. the investigation into the cause of a huge fire at a landmark comedy club will continue tomorrow. friday nights fire destroyed the original pepper belly comedy and variety theater on texas street. it took firefighters about three hours to control that fire. yesterday firefighters spent the day making sure no debris would fall into the street. the area has been rendered safe and texas street is back open to the public. firefighters in napa say an electric blanket may be to blame for a fire that destroyed a mobile home. that fire broke out early yesterday morning at the napa valley manner which is on lincoln avenue. a neighbor woke up to flames and tried to put it out with a bucket of water. but was unsuccessful. firefighters say that mobile home is a total loss. fortunately nobody was hurt. crime in california rose sharply lasteer according to fbi statistics violent crime and property crime rose in 40 of california's largest cities.

it is the largest crime incross the state has seen in 20 years. crime rates vary greatly by city. analysts say crime will likely increase again as prisons begin releasing inmates early. a new report shows a number of teenagers in marin county being arrested for dui's has doubled. they arrested twice as many teenagers 18 and younger for driving under the influence in 2012 compared to the year before. the department also says the dui arrests of teenagers almost always involves multiple passengers. suspicious package shut down stockton tunnel for several hours. they responded to vallejo yesterday afternoon when someone spotted a suitcase. people in nearby businesses were told to shelter in place. is >> it was a metal case and we had no other way to determine

what it was other than just because there is so much pedestrian, vehicle traffic. just tons of people out here. we had to air on safety. >> the tunnel was closed for about two hours. a robot removed the suitcase which did not contain anything hazardous. a banner is being blamed for cutting power to thousands of people in downtown san francisco. that banner promoting hair cuts fell from a small plane around noon yesterday. now you can see where it landed. it landed on power lines and that did force crews to shut down the busy intersection. it also knocked out power to almost 2,000 people in the sonoma and china base neighborhoods. >> i saw a plane banner carry -- a plane carrying a banner. the banner was frailing and drifting. >> power has now been restored. the faa is look into what caused that banner to come off

the plane. construction on high speed rail is said to begin in july. state has not bought the land needed for the bullet train route. officials haven't acquired a single acre along the central valley route where construction is supposed to begin in six months. they hope to begin making offers on lands in the next several weeks. the cost of acquiring land could delay the project even further. prices have been rising and that could raise property owners expectations far above what the state expects to pay. in less than 30 minutes the oakland a's will start selling tickets for the upcoming season. a ktvu viewer tells us there are close to 200 people in line right now at the coliseum. that is what happens when you have a great season. tickets go on sale at 9:00 a.m.. you can get them at the coliseum. that is always fun or you can also buy them online. the a's remember are holding the fan fest at 10:30 this morning. tickets for that eastbound traffic -- for that event, however are sold out.

this hour. death toll continues to rise from the latest series of rioting in egypt. three people died this morning which follows 37 deaths. yesterday several hundred other people are injured. the violence began when protestors clashed with security personnel. they were angry at the death sentences handed out by an egyptian court. streets in some parts of egypt are desserted this morning. many shops are closed and hotels have asked their guests to leave in fear of more violence. u.s. is hoping to defuse a crisis in mali. right now the french military is waging war against al qaeda linked militants. they promised the u.s. would help refuel u.s. french jets. they also plan to assist in the fighting. u.s. government says it will likely train them for combat as well. a new york congressman is working with officials to locate an american woman who

disappeared while traveling alone in turkey. she aerod in istanbul on january 7th. she was supposed to return last week but did not get on her flight home and has not been heard from sense. her passport and clothing was in her room in turkey. her family are now waiting for answers. >> you know, you have so many stories going through your mind. you don't know what to think. you don't know what to believe. you don't know what to expect. >> the family says they are working with u.s. officials as well as the turkish national police. he will be traveling to turkey this week to meet with authorities. seven people were killed after a violent saturday in chicago. one of the victims was a 16- year-old boy. no arrests have been made in any of the homicides. last year chicago recorded more than 500 homicides for the first time since 2008. police in southern fool lee are questioning a man suspected

of killing a triable officer critically jurying two deputies and setting a fatal fire. it all began when officers responded to a report of a man walking down the road. he opened fire on a triable officer. killing him and two sheriffs deputies were critically injuried. they also found the remains of an elderly man inside a burning mobile home. >> arrive add the scene -- at the scene. encountered the male. fired multiple rounds. striking the police officer who was fatally wounded here at the scene. >> authorities believe the shooter suspect the fire before he was confronted by the officers. he was also shot but is expected to survive. schools in los angeles are stepping up security following last months school shooting in newtown, connecticut. the district announced it's hiring 1,000 aids for security oaf forts. at least two aids will be hired

to 400 elementary schools if they will have radios and vests. the plan is expected to cost $4.2 million. a dallas man is thanking some good samaritans for thanking his life. he doesn't remember running off the road and into a lake friday morning. his suv sanks to bottom and left him trapped inside. two joggers saw that crash and tried to pull him out. three police officers came to help and pulled his unconscious body to safety through the sunroof of his vehicle. >> on my way to work. next thing i know i'm in the ambulance. no clue what happened. >> tropical storm say hay -- doctors say he suffered a mild seizure. they told him to avoid driving for at least the next six months. nearly 50 hikers had to be rescued in arizona after they were trapped by raging flood waters. crews had to use cell phone signals to help find the

people. after a massive search effort everyone was accounted for. the flood waters came from run off from heavy rain fall earlier in the day. victims of super storm sandy are being tested again. this time by frigid temperatures. some gas lines are still not working. people have to resort to space heaters and blankets just to stay warm. residents have been flooding the gas company for help. but they say it's very difficult to have the crews come out and make repairs. >> if i'm not here, you get skipped over and yo have to wait again. so you have no choice. >> there is one big source of help coming. that is the force of volunteers. a number of people have been showing up to clean up and get the neighborhood back to normal. >> hearing are scheduled to begin this week on chuck hagels nomination nation to replace leon pi neat.net that. he is scheduled to appear before the senate arms services committee on thursday. hagel is a republican but his

hours, their flight leaves and they are gathered at the 49ers practice facility where they are waiting to greet the team. >> reporter: well i tell you at the santa clara practice facility, it is growing right now and take a look at this crowd. it is growing, they believe that the 49ers could bring home another championship back here to the bay area and they are all gathered to the practice facility, the headquarters of the 49ers and let me show you what is going on in the last half hour as the 49ers have been pulling in, in their own cars into the facility. obviously they will get all of their gear packed up and get ready to go and they will be boarding the buses not long from now heading off to the airport and leading to the facility just about noon today from that flight to new orleans. and we spoke to the fans about why they want to be out here and they say that the fans are

identify the bodies and the sports center has been turned into a make-shift morgue. it is a cement area in cupertino and it is a story we first told you about a few hours ago. both trucks and tires caught fire there at the plant and pg&e was also called to the scene to assist with power lines, no word on the cause of that fire. this is the same spot where three people died and several others were shot years ago. a disgrunt tall -- dips groundel employee -- an upset employee shot him and killed himself two days later. they got shot last night and that driveby shooting happened at the terrible section -- intersection across

from the offices of facebook. they were in a car with four other people when they were hit. the driver took off to east palo alto before stopping for help. that car was ridelled with close to a dozen bullet holes and they are trying to figure out with the shooting was gang related. >> the child was hitting on his mother's lap and they were both hit by bullets. the child sustained a grazing wound to his leg and head. >> the child was taken to the medical center and their injuries were not considered life-threatening. and the people shooting them were last seen headed towards the dumbarton. a man was gunned down near bell street in east palo alto. he was pronounced dead at the scene and a half a dozen bullet casings surrounded his body. no arrests have been made in

either case. one person is in critical condition after being thrown from a car after an earlelly morning collision which happened near college avenue and montana street. police are still looking into what caused that carat and both were going the speed limit. drugs and alcohol do not appear to be factors. police crashed overnight while going the wrong way on interstate 880 in hayward. the driver spotted the vehicle at 11:00 a.m. but the driver took off. he ended up going north on the southbound lanes. the driver still crashed into another car and two women in that other car were taken to the hospital and their injuries are not considered to be life- threatening. the man driving the other way ran from the scene and at last check has not been cut. guns are being turned in by their owners. 680 guns were turned in at a

gun buy back event in salt lake and gun owners got $100 for a shotgun and rifle and 200 for assault weapons. jackie spear a survivor of the jones town massacre said every gun turned in is one less life lost. >> we'll see whether or not any person or any persons should be allowed to have a weapon... >> they held a town hall meeting about gun violence and somebody in that audience said gun control is not the answer but justices just need to do a better job locking up felons. it is the first sunday that the new parking fees will be enforced between noon and 6:00 p.m. up until now, drivers were just
